A complete guide to Google IO 2022, including what we expect to see
The Google IO 2022 conference will be held on May 11 and 12, and will be largely an online event.
Google has already shared the program, so we can already get an idea of what we will see, although we still have to find out what surprises the company has in store for us, which are traditionally revealed in the main presentation of the conference , also known as a keynote, which is the first thing we see when Google IO starts.
After the keynote, the rest of the conference is made up of talks and tutorials on how to use Google’s endless tools.
Now that the public beta of Android 13 is available, from April 26, and that according to the program it is confirmed that we will know more details about the operating system, the big question is what new hardware products the company could present. We’ve dug into this below, but we’ll tell you ahead of time that the rumored Pixel Watch smartwatch and Pixel 6a phone are the most likely candidates.
Like last year, much of Google IO 2022 will be virtual, but it is possible to register to attend in person, according to the FAQ section of the event website. After Google had to cancel its 2020 event due to the pandemic, Google IO 2021 was strictly online. But this year it will apparently be a hybrid, since in addition to being able to be seen online, there will be people who will attend in person, so it is possible that we will see more demonstrations of what Google has been developing.
Surely the person in charge of kicking off the main keynote will be Sundar Pichai, whom you can see on the cover of this article, and this main speech can be seen online for free.
Until the keynote on May 11, we will not officially know what surprises Google intends to show us at this year’s event, but we can make guesses based on the rumors and leaks that have been lately.

Below, we’re going to go over all of Google’s hardware and software for Google IO 2022, both what’s confirmed by the show and what we expect to see, plus explain how the virtual event will work.
Let’s get to the point
- What are we talking about? From Google’s annual developer conference.
- When is? May 11 and 12, 2022
- How can I sign up? How much? You can register from the official Google website for the event , and it is free. You just need a Google account.
What are the dates of Google IO 2022?
As announced by Google on March 16, the Google IO 2022 developer conference will run from Wednesday, May 11 to Thursday, May 12. These dates coincide with previous years, since it is usually celebrated in mid-May.
The main presentation, that is, the keynote, will be on the first day (May 11) at 10:30 pm indian time.
Will Google IO 2022 be strictly virtual?
Google canceled IO 2020 in March, coinciding with the start of the pandemic and lockdown. With that situation, it was obviously somewhat dangerous to hold an in-person event.
The conference usually takes place at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California, where COVID-19 restrictions have been gradually lifted.
But since Google IO was held in a purely virtual way in 2021, many thought that the same thing would happen in 2022. This has turned out to be only partially true, as this year it is possible to sign up to attend in person, but the company has said invitations will be hard to come by as they are so limited.
What will Google IO 2022 be like?
Most casual Googlers associate the Google IO with the keynote, which is broadcast over the Internet so anyone can see it. But in previous years it was also possible to buy a pass to attend Google developer sessions, as well as new product demos, code labs, and other events for professionals or hobbyists.
This year, most of those events will be virtual and free. On the other hand, there will be other demonstrations and talks where it will be necessary to reserve a place due to its popularity.
Google IoT 2022 schedule
Thanks to the fact that Google has already published the official program for Google IO 2022, we already know what talks there will be, which are usually about software.
As we have mentioned, the most interesting thing for most users is the main presentation or keynote of the conference , and according to the program, it will be on May 11 at 10:30 p.m. indian time.
Next, and lasting until May 12, all Google IO 2022 developer talks will be held, aimed at both beginners and experts, and thanks to the program we know that there will be talks about what’s new in the Google Assistant, Chrome OS, Google Home, Google Play, Firebase and Flutter, among others. In addition, there will be plenty of talks for developers to learn how to update their apps for large screens, manage background work, add machine learning to development tools, and much more.
If you are interested in the above, take a look at the program and you will be able to check the schedule of all these contents and sign up.
Be that as it may, at the software level, the great star of the event will be Android 13, since Google will give us many more details.
The latest Android operating system launched its public beta on April 26, after the developer beta launched for Pixel 6 and below phones in February. Thanks to this, we can already get an idea of what Android 13 brings us .
At Google IO 2022 they will give us more details and show us new tricks and revelations, since they will surely talk about the operating system during the official presentation, but also, according to the program, there is a space reserved to talk to us about “the latest of what happens in the universe of Android development: Android 13, Jetpack, tools, performance and more.”
We are not surprised that Google presents us with Android 13 now, since in addition to doing the same with Android 12 , the company wants to get ahead of Apple and show its news first, which will almost certainly announce iOS 16 at the WWDC in June.
From what we’ve seen so far, it looks like privacy will be a big deal in Android 13, and otherwise it looks like the new version of the operating system will be a refinement, with new, more refined themes, and other really handy new features.
Also, we may see Android 13L , which is the version tailored specifically for tablets and foldable devices.
Google IoT 2022: new products we expect to see
Moving on to speculation and what we expect to see, we can take a look at Google’s annual product calendar, as well as all the leaks and rumors we’ve heard, to get an idea of what surprises Google could have in store for the launch. Google IO 2022 keynote.
This is what we could see:
Google Pixel Watch, a new Fitbit and updates to Wear OS
Ever since Google bought Fitbit , we’ve been curious how Google will put its own spin on these devices.
While since Google IO 2021 we’ve seen a greater focus from the company on how Wear OS fits into its product lineup, we’ve yet to see another Google-branded smartwatch.
This could be the great year for Google smartwatches and activity bracelets . The company is aware that the Apple Watch is the king of this category, and it is possible that 2022 will be the year in which we see some very important improvements and new features.
Google Pixel 6a
We may see the Google Pixel 6a: the company has previously presented its A-series of affordable phones at Google IO, although the last two years it has done so in August.
On the other hand, there are several indications that the Pixel 6a could be announced at Google IO 2022. We have written an article in which we have assessed the probability of this happening, and we have gathered all the information related to the appearance of the Pixel 6a. Pixel 6a at the conference: you can read it by clicking here .
The Google Pixel 6a is a budget version of the Pixel 6, designed for all those people who don’t want to spend as much money as the Android flagships Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro cost.
We could also see other Google A-series devices, such as headphones, at the event, as they have recently appeared at IoT.
Google Pixel 7, the folding Pixel and the Pixel Tablet: not very likely
Google is developing the Pixel 7 , a Pixel foldable phone, and the rumored Pixel Tablet, and it’s likely that they’ll be preparing these new devices for an October 2022 launch. Google decides to give us some details during the Google IO 2022 that begins on May 11.
However, as Google IO 2022 will allow some people to attend in person, they may want to take the opportunity to show and demo these new features.
News on Google Maps
It’s not confirmed, but we think Google IO is the perfect time for the company to show us new features for its super popular GPS app.
